How important do you place in a serious relationship?

I asked my bf of 3 years how important he placed in our relationship. He said top 2. I was really offended and shocked. We have been through many things together. And out of all the vitals in a relationship- trust, communication, care for one another, unconditional love- he places at 2nd??? I mean I know is important, but I dont think it should be placed as the second most important thing in our relationship!.and then he ended up getting mad at me for thinking it shouldn't be placed that high! What do you think? how important is it?
